Link to NMP/ FMP

(Talk about my NMP and mention how I stuck to the timetable that I produced in the advanced research strategies module- expand!!)

Time management is a huge part of any photographers life, or come to think of it any professionals life. Time is money or so they say. Either way, time is very important to myself and being well organised is one of my positive points. For my NMP I decided to develop a time management planner to make sure that I was doing each element of my project at the right time so that I kept up to date with my project. This is the biggest and most important project of my career to date therefore having a planner was imperative. Below is a copy of that planner. I managed to stick to the planner well, not that the planner perfect because I designed it before I started creating the work therefore it is always going to be some time out of sync. I am happy that I chose to use a time management planner because it really helped me along the way. Producing this planner has given me good practice for when I have to project manage other photographic project in my future career.

Job Opportunity

This post is surrounding a job opportunity that sounds like it might be very interesting and good experience. My university often send out emails containing relevant job opportunities within the area of each courses subject, for example our photography course gets sent out many different photography job opportunities. The job links that they send out are often very different, some are not relevant to certain people and some are. I was looking at one of the emails a few weeks ago and noticed an opportunity that sounded really interesting, I opened the job link and read the cover text to see what the job entailed. Below is the information from that email.

Zeven Media have been in touch and are looking for Photobooth Attendants to accompany their photobooths at high profile corporate and fashion events. I know it’s not strictly enriching for our undergraduate’s studies but with summer approaching there might be some of your students looking for some paid work with the opportunity to mingle. Full info is below.

Thanks, Rachael

If you think you fit the bill then please email a CV (preferably with a photo) to jobs@zeven.co.uk

The job sounded some what interesting to me and with an interest in both fashion and photography I decided to apply. Having worked for a high fashion retail brand AllSaints for over 5 years, I thought that this might give me an advantage through the selection process. I then decided to adapt my CV to fit the criteria for this specific job, something that I had learnt to do during my first professional frameworks module at university. We were told that in order to be more successful when applying for jobs, it was necessary to adapt your standard CV to suit the company/ job role that you are applying for. This really came into its own when I decided to apply for this job because it enabled me to direct my past experiences to this specific company and I was able to change each element of my CV to make it more suitable for when the company read it. The main part of my CV that I changed was the initial statement at the top of my CV,  a brief overview of myself and my strengths as well as my past experience in photography. I changed this to suit. Below is a copy of the CV that I sent to the company, the very day that I read the job email.

Skills

employment

September 2009 to April 2014- Stylist & Sales Assistant at AllSaints Spinningfields & AllSaints Trafford Centre
Having worked for this high fashion brand for over 5 years, I have learnt a number of transferable skills as well as gaining confidence in myself. Working in this fast paced environment has enabled me to develop my customer service and time management skills to a high standard. Having to resolve customer issues has enabled me not only to be able to talk to customers but also to problem solve in order to gain complete customer satisfaction. I have become a well-trusted employee and work well within a close-knit team. Having maintained this job for a long period of time helps to shows my reliability and dedication for whatever I do.

January 2009 to September 2010- Risley Forge, Risley
This position was much more manual and hard work than other roles I have had. The forge produced metal products of many descriptions and this proved to be a totally different experience to what I was used too. This job meant I had to be resilient and determined as the work was very manually orientated.

June 2009 to September 2010- Waiter & Bar Tender at Duck Egg Bluu, Culcheth
As this restaurant was relatively expensive, the standard of customer service had to be high. This position therefore meant I had to develop my customer interaction so that the customers had a great experience. This therefore gave me great communication and customer service skills that could be transferred to many different job roles.

January 2009 to June 2009- Waiter & Kitchen Assistant at Sopranos Italian Restaurant, Culcheth
As I had to work as a waiter and kitchen assistant, I gained vast knowledge about the whole of the hospitality sector, from producing the product to serving the finished article. Working in the kitchen enabled me to gain hands on experience in health and safety, time management and coping with extreme stress and pressure.

I believed that my CV possessed enough relevant past experiences that I would be suitable for the job. When I sent my cv together with a short cover letter to the company I received an interview within a couple of days. I went to the interview and got to know about the business some more, it seemed like a great opportunity.

Only a few days after that I got a phone call offering me the job and asking me to come in to discuss a contract. I then went to the head office and met with the two owners and discussed about the job role and training. During my conversations with the owners I was told that the business had recently been on the TV programme The Dragons Den where they were successful in receiving investment from three of the Dragons! This sounded very promising and it sounds like the business is expanding at a massive rate therefore it is a great time to get into the business. During the training day I got to know about the equipment and how to set up the devices, it was a great environment and I was very worthwhile. This whole experience happened within just over a week and I was surprised to see that securing a job could be so quick. I have been asked to go down to an event at Harvey Nichols in Birmingham where I will learnt more about the job role and get to grip with the equipment. This job is full time hours and I am looking forward to see where the job takes me! I am glad that the university sent out many emails and that some of them may hold great opportunities.

Charlotte Cotton Book Review

Due to my final year dissertation surrounding the photographic aesthetic of deadpan, I had a lot of time to read around the aesthetic style. One of the most poignant and well written reviews on the aesthetic are that of Charlotte Cotton a curator a photography writer.

I will now give some information about Cottons chapter about deadpan in The Photograph as Contemporary Art. I want to mention how well she understands the aesthetic, she is one of the only current photography critics that have give their time to tell others about this amazing photographic style. I have become obsessed with reading more into the style and have noticed that my work has been influenced by my readings for my dissertation.

Below is a summary of the book that has helped me all the way through my dissertation.

A short illustrated survey of the use of photography in contemporary art since the mid-1980s. The work of approximately 150 of the best-known artist-photographers are featured: Andreas Gursky, Nan Goldin, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Richard Billingham, Juergen Teller, Thomas Demand, Yinka Shonibare, Thomas Ruff, JeffWall, Wolfgang Tillmans, and many more. Themed chapters consider subjects such as narrative and storytelling in art photography, photographing the everyday and the insignificant, the use of photography in conceptual art, and the cool, detached, objective aesthetic prevalent in current art photography.- http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/202859.The_Photograph_as_Contemporary_Art

I will continue to read into Cottons work and will always owe Cotton for the words that she shared in the deadpan chapter.

Editing Development

Today I was involved in photographing for a clothing brand called A TO B. These are a a relatively new company who begun in around 2012, they produce a number of different T-shirts and also different styles of hats. I was asked to help them out on a shoot, photographing their latest launch of designs. I took them to the Northern Quarter in Manchester and we stayed there walking around from about 9am- 12.30pm. This was a very relaxed style shoot that involved a professional model and a stylist. I chose to edit may of the photographs due to the fact that in all honesty they didn't turn out as well as I wanted them to. I have produced a number of shoots similar to this which have turned out very well but this one didn't seem to work due to location and other factors. Therefore, it was imperative that I edit the photographs that did turn out well.

Below are some of the edits that I produced from the shoot.

Through post production editing, I have been able to make the most of the photographs that turned out, I have been able to save the shoot and turn it around due to the help of photoshop. I really had to develop my personal skills and this brief has enabled me to do just that. I am happy that this real life brief has been able to provide me with a real opportunity to develop one of my objectives and I am happy with the way that it has turned out.

PDP Development

Below are two screenshots of my developing PDP, it is obvious to see the development and advancement of my personal plan. These goals are ones that I feel are vital for my progression into the industry, the most important issues that need development before I graduate university. It is obvious from the "actual date of achieving objectives" column as to the objectives that I have been able to address during this module. The other objectives that I have in my plan but have not yet been achieved fully have all been developed and worked on throughout my other module and during my personal time. I am confident that I will continue to develop each objective to a high standard and I will become more successful due to this exercise/ module.

Also note the new objectives and also the adapted objectives from the initial PDP, these are ones that have become apparent that they need attention. Having to think of points within yourself that need addressing is difficult however it has taught me how to think about things within myself that I feel are weaker than other issues, this is a life lesson and it will not only help me photographically but also in day-to-day life. I believe that the below PDP is coming to an end and that the points that I have set as my objectives are the most important for me to be focussing on, having highlighted all of these points I now have to go away and finish filling in my PDP.

Food Photography

During the initial stages of my NMP, a tutor noticed that I my still life food photographs were very strong, in some cases stronger than some of my portraiture. She pushed me towards pursuing this style and now I am currently finishing my FMP having pursued the food & still life photography successfully. This has opened up a new possible career path and I am very pleased with the outcomes from this module, I am very glad that my tutor and others pushed me towards making more of this kind of photography and I am excited for the possibilities that this style holds for me. Below are just a handful of the photographs that I took for my NMP, in particular the food photography style photographs.
